Description

In this episode, we discuss The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which in a strange turn of events, Maartje likes better than Sam. Apparently the book is better. Sam would know, having read it. Read the book. Or be lazy, like Maartje.

Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: The Desperadoes Who Plotted Hitler’s Downfall, Giving Birth to Modern-day Black Ops by Damien Lewis

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare: How Churchill’s Secret Warriors Set Europe Ablaze and Gave Birth to Modern Black Ops by Damien Lewis is one of those WWII books I would even recommend to someone who doesn’t do a lot of WWII reading. Yes, I have two separate recommendation lists in my head! Of course, this is a pop history book designed as a jumping-off point, not unlike Ben MacIntyre’s SAS Rogue Heroes, but it was thorough and well-researched, and I enjoyed the narrative-based writing style. The figure of Anders Lassen looms particularly large in my mind, even weeks after reading it. Lewis gives us as much of him as he can – the de-facto leader of the group for most of the war, and a man who died at the age of 25 and left us only a legacy through other people, as well as a half-finished diary. A soldier known for his killing abilities, he had stopped writing in it on the day he first killed a man with his knife.

Highly recommend.

Ep 64 – The Devil’s Brigade – The Birth of the Black Devils on Monte la Difensa

In this episode of Rosie the Reviewer, we take on the 1968 WWII film The Devil’s Brigade, a movie full of misfit characters, Italian mountains, and a whole lot of bagpipes. Based on a real American-Canadian commando unit known as the Devil’s Brigade or the Black Devils, the film mixes adventure with questionable casting choices (why does everyone look 47 or up?) and a fun hour long training session. We talk about William Holden, snake collections, the birth of the Green Berets, and good old Americans scrapping with Canadians. Also: fake red berets, what’s up with that?

From Christoph Waltz’s unforgettable performance as the chilling Hans Landa to the film’s masterful tension, spaghetti-western style, and cathartic violence, we break down why this outrageous WWII fantasy still captivates audiences. We also explore the real-life echoes behind the “Basterds,” Tarantino’s bold music choices, and what makes alternate history so tricky — and thrilling — when it’s done right.

Ep 46 – Sonny Boy – A Powerful Story of Love, Struggle, and Resistance in WWII

In this episode of Rosie the Reviewer, we dive into Sonny Boy, a Dutch film based on the book by Annejet van der Zijl. The movie tells the true story of Dutch-Surinam couple Rika van der Lans and Waldemar Nods, highlighting their struggles during the German occupation of the Netherlands. The couple’s relationship and their efforts to hide Jews in their boarding house make for a compelling, emotional tale of resistance during WWII. Maartje also shares her love for Dutch history and the personal connection to this story.
