IchBinSophieScholl on Instagram

In 2021, a project by Südwestrundfunk (SWR) and Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) brought Sophie Scholl to Instagram in honour of what would have been her 100th birthday. Between the 4th of May 2021 and the 18th of February 2022, Instagram followers could interact with her account and follow the last ten months of Sophie’s life, starting with her move from Ulm to Munich (4th of May 1942) until her arrest (18th of February 1943), as if she were on Instagram in this century. Actress Luna Wedler portrays Sophie Scholl on the account. Other actors are brother Hans Scholl, their friends, other White Rose (“Weisse Rose”) resistance group members, and Sophie’s love interest, Wehrmacht officer Fritz Hartnage.

The posts are in German, but you can use Instagram’s translation feature to read the captions.

Surprisingly much debate about Sam Claflin’s casting, the power of women in the Ministry of Information, and why Bill Nighy steals every scene as Ambrose Hilliard. Plus, the real history of women in Britain’s propaganda machine.

Episode: Munich: the Edge of War

This week, we get our spy on with Munich: The Edge of War. This fictional narrative surrounding the Munich Agreement presents a rare sympathetic view of Neville Chamberlain’s handling of the negotiations, but above all, it makes for an exciting film.
