Welcome to Rosie the Reviewer, a Dutch-Canadian female-led WW2 media podcast. A new episode airs every Friday!
Everything about Rosie and our WW2 adventures.
This week, we discuss Flags Of Our Fathers, about the famous flag raising photo taken on Iwo Jima. Sam has read the book and Maartje has also watched part of the companion film Letters From Iwo Jima. We’re very serious and learn one very important lesson at the end.
This week, we discuss The Best Years Of Our Lives (1946), based on the novella Glory For Me. It’s an honest movie about three men from different walks of life returning home after the war and their struggles to settle back into civilian life. Also, weird hats.
In this episode, we discuss Hacksaw Ridge, southern accents, our love for Andrew Garfield and our hopes that Desmond Doss gets one moah.
In this episode, our friend Bec joins us to talk about Fury. Listening to Bec talk about Fury is much better than watching Fury, for the most part.
In this episode, we discuss the 1949 classic Twelve O’Clock High and Maartje reflects on WHF506’s 8th Air Force on Film tour in Cambridge.
Ps. This features Sam reading a passage from the book Twelve O’Clock High and that alone should make you want to listen.
This week, we discuss Taika Waititi’s satirical film, Jojo Rabbit (2019) and once again question what makes good satire. This story is based on Christine Leunens’s 2008 book Caging Skies that Sam had the difficult task of reading. Pallet cleanser after that one, Sam?
This is part two of our Generation War episode with Anna! We get into the nitty-gritty of this show and have some honest discussions about the series’ themes. Thank you again, Anna, for making us sound smart.
In this episode, we take on the German Perspective as we discuss 2013’s Generation War with our friend Anna! This three-part limited series received praise and criticism in equal measure, and it’s a tough watch. Does it take enough risk? It certainly makes for meaningful conversation. This is episode one of two about this series, so be sure to check back for part two next week.
In this episode, we discuss The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, which in a strange turn of events, Maartje likes better than Sam. Apparently the book is better. Sam would know, having read it. Read the book. Or be lazy, like Maartje.
In episode 20 (are you proud? We’re proud!), we discuss Allied, a movie Mark requested! And by discuss, we mean we razz on it for 40 minutes. We hope you enjoy it anyway, Mark. Thanks for your request ;).
In part two of two, we discuss the Canadian TV show Bomb Girls, specifically the second half of season two and then that thing they call a movie that came after it. Are we harsh? Maybe a little. Is it entertaining? Sure is!
In part one of two episodes about the Canadian TV show Bomb Girls, we discuss the lives and adventures of a group of women working in a munitions factory in Toronto! Let me tell you, we are very excited to finally be talking about Canada.
Also, all the men are trash. Fasten your seatbelts. You’re in for some drama!
We dive into 1963´s The Great Escape, a movie so long that Maartje had to watch the last 30 minutes at three times the speed. Sam did a lot of research for this and now knows a lot about escaping, so if you´re ever in jail…
Buongiorno Principessa! In this episode, we laugh and we cry about this magical and tragical Italian masterpiece. Is it just us, or do hilariously funny films make the best tragedies?
In part two of our mythmaking episode, we discuss the mythmaking about WW2 in our respective countries (the Philippines, Canada and the Netherlands) and Germany. (Psst. Listen to part one first if you haven’t.)
Sam (our guest from the Philippines) joins us for this one again.
