Ep 68 – Masters of the Air – Rosie Rosenthal, Black Week and the Hundredth’s Losses (Part Two)

Description

In this episode of Rosie the Reviewer, we continue our Masters of the Air series with episodes 4 through 6. If you haven’t heard the first installment yet, listen here for episodes 1-3. George is back again to help us cover everything from Quinn and Bailey’s escape routes to Black Week, and welcome Rosie Rosenthal. We break down new character arcs, major missions, and quiet emotional … uh, breakdowns, including Bucky’s slow downward spiral, Crosby’s grief, and Rosie finding his rhythm (with some help from Artie Shaw).

Next? Check out episode 3 of our Masters of the Air Saga, or listen to Kai Alexander and Bailey Brook.

If this episode left you haunted by the numbers. How few men made it back, how many missions they had to fly. Then imagine what it was like for the people on the ground.

Sweatin’ Out the Mission: The Eighth Air Force Ground Support in World War Two by Malcolm Holland offers you a glance at it.

It’s a slim book, but it packs a punch. Holland turns the spotlight on the ground crews: the guys who patched the planes and counted them home. It’s the side of the air war we rarely get in prestige TV, and honestly, we’d love a whole series about them.

Ep 64 – The Devil’s Brigade – The Birth of the Black Devils on Monte la Difensa

In this episode of Rosie the Reviewer, we take on the 1968 WWII film The Devil’s Brigade, a movie full of misfit characters, Italian mountains, and a whole lot of bagpipes. Based on a real American-Canadian commando unit known as the Devil’s Brigade or the Black Devils, the film mixes adventure with questionable casting choices (why does everyone look 47 or up?) and a fun hour long training session. We talk about William Holden, snake collections, the birth of the Green Berets, and good old Americans scrapping with Canadians. Also: fake red berets, what’s up with that?

From high-stakes sabotage in occupied France to moral grey zones and surprise betrayals, we explore what makes this little-known show so gripping. We talk about the character arcs we love, historical accuracy, and the surprisingly brutal tone. Expect fake dating, trauma flashbacks, Nazi hypocrisy, and a that one guy from Schitt’s Creek.

Episode: Jojo Rabbit

This week, we discuss Taika Waititi’s satirical film, Jojo Rabbit (2019) and once again question what makes good satire. This story is based on Christine Leunens’s 2008 book Caging Skies that Sam had the difficult task of reading. Pallet cleanser after that one, Sam?
